This skillset is essential for anyone currently working, or intending to work, in health, aged care, disability support, or community services. The skillset is designed as a preparatory course which can lead to a full qualification. We have several other units in the Aged Care and Disability area which can be substituted for some of these units. This course is delivered face-to-face.
This course is designed for individuals interested in pursuing a career in the Healthcare and Community Services sectors.
This skillset is usually requested by community organisations who have potential learners interested in this type of work; or by aged care and disability organisations wanting their workers to upskill. Residential Aged Care Worker: providing daily living support to older people in residential facilities; Disability Support Worker: assisting people with physical or intellectual disabilities to live independently and participate in the community; Community Aged Care Support Worker: supporting vulnerable individuals to live independently in their own homes; Personal Care Assistant: working in hospitals or clinics to assist patients with personal hygiene and mobility.
Units of Competency
HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid
This unit applies to all persons who may be required to provide a first aid response in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings.
HLTWHS001 – Participate in workplace health and safety
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required for workers to participate in safe work practices to ensure their own health and safety, and that of others. The unit applies to all workers who require knowledge of workplace health and safety (WHS) to carry out their own work, either under direct supervision or with some individual responsibility.
CHCDIV001 – Work with diverse people
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to work respectfully with people from diverse social and cultural groups and situations, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This unit applies to all workers.
CHCLEG001 – Work legally and ethically
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to identify and work within the legal and ethical frameworks that apply to an individual job role. This unit applies to community services and health workers who play a proactive role in identifying and meeting their legal and ethical responsibilities.
CHCCCS031 – Provide individualised support
This unit describes performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to organise, provide and monitor personal support services for a person within the limits established by an individualised plan. This unit applies to workers who provide support under direct or remote supervision. Work is carried out in a manner which supports independence as well as the physical and emotional wellbeing of the person receiving support.

Learners must have the necessary language, literacy and numeracy skills to interpret and apply relevant information to commence learning in this program. Learners may be required to undergo a pre-enrolment assessment to determine their Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) capability. This assessment aligns with the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) which describes the outcomes of foundation skills relevant to the level of this program. The outcomes of this assessment will indicate whether a student is suitable for the course or whether they require additional educational and support services, reasonable adjustment or referral to other training or services.

Knowledge acquired will be assessed through a combination of Knowledge Questions and Performance Tasks such as role plays, written tasks, observation by the assessor, and any other assessment method deemed appropriate by the College.
