This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to follow organisational infection prevention and control procedures, including implementing standard and transmission-based precautions and responding to infection risks.

This course is essential in developing your workplace health and safety capacity. It has been contextualised to meet the immediate need for workers in a variety of roles to upskill in infection control.

This unit applies to individuals working primarily in health and direct client care contexts; as well as individuals working in a broad range of industries. Please note this course has assessment requirements that must be completed in a workplace. If you are not able to access a workplace for the practical assessments, you will not be able to successfully complete this unit of competency.

  • equipment for cleaning, including sterilised sharps if relevant to role.

Successful completion of this unit equips learners with essential risk-minimisation skills that are highly valued across multiple sectors: Health, Aged Care, and Disability Support, Food Handling and Hospitality, Retail and Personal Services, Transport, Logistics, and Cleaning Operations.

  • able to attend classes at the designated times
  • able to complete learning and assessment tasks to a satisfactory level, with support where required.

Learners must have the necessary language, literacy and numeracy skills to interpret and apply relevant information to commence learning in this program. Learners will be required to undergo a pre-enrolment assessment to determine their Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) capability. This test aligns with the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) which describes the outcomes of foundational skills relevant to the level of this program. The outcomes of this assessment will indicate whether a learner is suitable for the course or whether they require additional educational and support services, reasonable adjustment or referral to other training or services.

Knowledge acquired will be assessed through a combination of Knowledge Questions and direct observation, and any other assessment method deemed appropriate by the College.

You will need:

  • workplace, organisation policies and procedures
  • access to a workplace supervisor to observe, monitor and assess your performance or ability to video your practical assessments to submit to our trainer.

Upon successful completion, learners will receive a nationally accredited Statement of Attainment in the following unit:
