This course covers essential skills for Skilled Migrants to better approach and succeed in the Australian employment market, focusing on English language usage in many settings. It augments existing core services delivered by SECC’s Skilled Migrant Mentor Program and is recommended for those less confident and comfortable with Australian English language usage, interpretation and nuance in professional settings.

Learners will gain several benefits from completing this unit, including but not limited to:

  • communicate ideas clearly and professionally in workplace settings
  • build confidence when engaging with colleagues, clients, and supervisors
  • strengthen listening and interpersonal communication skills.

By the end of the course, participants will have increased confidence in communicating in the workplace. Participants will be able to:

  • apply communication skills such as active listening, presenting with clarity and conciseness and using appropriate etiquette according to Australian workplace culture
  • give and receive feedback in the professional development context, both for themselves and for other people they work with
  • foster good working relationships in the workplace and manage difficult situations.

To gain and retain professional employment, candidates require the ability to communicate effectively in job interviews and with workplace colleagues and stakeholders.
