This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to communicate effectively with clients, colleagues, management and other industry providers.

This unit applies to a range of health and community service contexts where workers may communicate face-to-face, in writing or using digital media and work with limited responsibility under direct or indirect supervision.

Learners will gain several benefits from completing this course:

  • learn how to communicate effectively with different people and collaborate with colleagues
  • understand the importance of reporting problems to a supervisor
  • learn how to complete workplace documentation and contribute to continuous improvement in their workplace.

Upon successful completion, learners will be able to:

  • use verbal and non-verbal communication to enhance understanding and demonstrate respect
  • listen to requests, clarify meaning and respond appropriately
  • use communication skills to avoid, defuse and resolve conflict situations
  • complete written and electronic workplace documents to organisation standards
  • contribute to identifying and voicing improvements in work practices.

On successful completion of the course, learners can pursue roles such as:

  • personal care assistant
  • assistant in nursing
  • support worker
  • community service worker.

 
It is highly recommended that, in addition to this unit, the learner also undertake other units in the health and community sphere.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to communicate effectively with clients, colleagues, management and other industry providers.

This unit applies to a range of health and community service contexts where workers may communicate face-to-face, in writing or using digital media and work with limited responsibility under direct or indirect supervision.

  • age: 15 or older
  • able to attend classes at the designated times
  • able to complete learning and assessment tasks to a satisfactory level, with support where required.

Learners must have the necessary language, literacy and numeracy skills to interpret and apply relevant information to commence learning in this program. Learners will be required to undergo a pre-enrolment assessment to determine their Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) capability. This test aligns with the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) which describes the outcomes of foundational skills relevant to the level of this program. The outcomes of this assessment will indicate whether a learner is suitable for the course or whether they require additional educational and support services, reasonable adjustment or referral to other training or services.

Knowledge acquired will be assessed through a combination of Knowledge Questions and Performance Tasks such as role plays, written tasks, observation by the assessor, and any other assessment method deemed appropriate by the College.

Upon successful completion, learners will receive a nationally accredited Statement of Attainment in the following unit:

CHCCOM005 – Communicate and work in health or community services
