This course develops essential workplace skills for entry-level roles in construction and general work settings. It covers workplace communication, including writing simple documents and participating in spoken interactions, strategies to identify job opportunities, and foundational work health and safety knowledge. Participants gain practical skills to communicate effectively, plan for employment, and work safely in routine and regulated construction environments.

This course is ideal for individuals starting a career in construction or general work. It helps learners develop essential skills in workplace communication, writing simple documents, and work health and safety, preparing them to work safely and confidently on construction sites.

By completing this course, learners will be able to:

  • identify job opportunities and plan for entry-level employment
  • recognise and report common hazards in construction and general work environments
  • apply basic risk controls and respond appropriately to workplace incidents and emergencies
  • select and use personal protective equipment (PPE) correctly to work safely on construction sites.

Graduates of this program can pursue entry-level roles in construction and general work sites, such as:

  • construction labourers
  • site assistants
  • workers requiring foundational workplace and safety skills.

Units of Competency

FSKLRG007 – Use strategies to identify job opportunities
This unit develops learners’ ability to identify employment pathways and job opportunities in the hospitality industry. It supports students in planning and preparing for entry-level roles.

FSKWTG006 – Write simple workplace information
This unit equips students with the skills to create simple workplace documentation, including forms, emails, and other routine written communication, enhancing workplace literacy.

FSKOCM003 – Participate in familiar spoken interactions at work
This unit develops students’ confidence and competence in everyday workplace communication, including speaking with colleagues, supervisors, and customers in routine situations.

CPCWHS1001 – Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry
This unit provides the mandatory work health and safety training required before undertaking construction work. It covers identifying and reporting common hazards, understanding basic risk controls, responding to incidents and emergencies, and correctly selecting and using personal protective equipment (PPE) to work safely and prevent injury.

It is expected that site-specific induction training will be conducted prior to conducting construction work.
Licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit. Relevant work health and safety state and territory regulatory authorities should be consulted to confirm jurisdictional requirements.

• age: 15 or older

• able to attend classes at the designated times and display the physical fitness requirements to safely participate in the course activities

• able to complete learning and assessment tasks to a satisfactory level, with support where required.

Learners must have the necessary language, literacy and numeracy skills to interpret and apply relevant information to commence learning in this program. Learners will be required to undergo a pre-enrolment assessment to determine their Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) capability. This test aligns with the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) which describes the outcomes of foundational skills relevant to the level of this program. The outcomes of this assessment will indicate whether a learner is suitable for the course or whether they require additional educational and support services, reasonable adjustment or referral to other training or services.

Knowledge acquired will be assessed through a combination of Knowledge Questions and Performance Tasks such as role plays, written tasks, observation by the assessor, and any other assessment method deemed appropriate by the College.

8:30 am – 5:00 pm, Monday to Friday. Specific day and time will be emailed once enrolment is confirmed.

At the College at 98 Bondi Road, Bondi Junction 2022 or at a location suitable to the organisation requesting the bespoke course.

This skillset may be fully funded by the NSW Government subject to set criteria to assess the learner’s eligibility.
